The Sweet - Jam Friday at 5pm

My Take:
This will be the 4th time I have seen The Sweet, all since 2008. I saw them at a festival in Des Moines as well as both times they have played the Jam. In my opinion, they have been a highlight every time I have seen them. They have a ton of hits that everyone knows, like "Love is Like Oxygen," "Fox on the Run," "Ballroom Blitz," and "Little Willy." They have a high-energy stage performance that always plays well at festivals. They are easily who I am most looking forward to seeing on Jam Friday (although I'm assuming KId Rock may change my mind!).

From previous writeups:

Did You Know?
Sweet played Moondance Jam in 2008 and 2013.
Def Leppard have released covers of both Sweet’s “Action” and “Hellraiser.”
Poison covers “Little Willy” on their album Poison’d!.
Tia Carrere covered “Ballroom Blitz” on the Wayne’s World Soundtrack.
Tucker and Connely were originally in the band Wainright’s Gentlemen.
Deep Purple’s Ian Gillan and Roger Glover were both in Wainright’s Gentlemen.
Sweet was banned from several concert venues due to controversial lyrics and light-show concert images.
Sweet first toured the US in 1975 after the success of “Fox on the Run” and the gold album Desolation Boulevard.
Current keyboardist Stevie Stewart is from Minneapolis and was in the band Crow, who had a hit with “Evil Woman (Don’t Play Your Games with Me)”.
Stewart has also toured with the band World Classic Rockers with members of other classic rock bands.
Current vocalist Joe Retta recorded an album with Miami Sound Machine.
“Ballroom Blitz” was a hit in the UK in 1973 but wasn’t a hit in the US until 1975.
“Little Willy” and “Love is Like Oxygen” are Sweet’s only two singles to chart higher in the US (#3 and #8) than in the UK (#4 and #9).
In 1985, a dance club medley of their hits titled “It’s…It’s…the Sweet Mix” hit the charts in the UK.
The band released a live album recorded in California in 2009.
The band released their first ever single on iTunes in 2010 – a cover of The Beatle’s “I Saw Her Standing There.”
Guitarist Stuart Smith left the band in 2012. He was replaced by Ricky Z.

My Take (from 2009)
After purchasing Sweet’s greatest hits I was surprised at how many songs I knew by the band. I really only knew that a couple songs (“Ballroom Blitz” and “Little Willy”) were theirs. I would guess the main reason I didn’t know much about the band is because it has been years since they toured the US consistently. I do think their show at Moondance has great potential because of the number of hits they have that most people will know. “Ballroom Blitz” and “Fox on the Run” may be as recognizable as any songs we will hear this year. My personal favorite is “Love is Like Oxygen.” After reading about the band, I formed an appreciation for them because they really lived two lives as a band. The first was the Chinn/Chapman period which could be described as very pop-oriented and wildly successful while the second came when they branched out on their own with a heavier sound and still were able to have success with singles like “Fox on the Run,” “Love is like Oxygen,” and “Action.” Another reason I respect the band is the sheer number of times they have been covered by other bands. A wide range of bands from Joan Jett to The Red Hot Chili Peppers to Def Leppard to Poison have all covered Sweet songs. I think this says a lot about the respect Sweet gets from other musicians. My guess is most people will be singing along all night and will walk away from their set saying “I didn’t know all those songs were theirs!”

My Take (From 2013)

I think the jam got a steal with Sweet at 3pm this year. If you remember, last time in 2009 they played at 9pm and were a big hit with the crowd. They have a huge number of hits and their songs go over very well in a festival setting. I also saw them at a festival in Des Moines in 2010 and again they stole the show that day with a great lineup of bands. I think this is the best 3pm signing in Moondance Jam history and could bring in the biggest crowd at that time slot ever in jam history. I also really like the fact that the jam has brought in a national band at 3pm. If they can do that every day the number of national bands jumps to 15 instead of 12.
The music brought me to Moondance Jam. The people bring me back.

In their heyday - Steve Priest has shall we say, grown a bit

You've been to the hallowed grounds, seen the festival, now read the book about it's history
