Honeymoon Suite was formed in 1981 in Niagara Falls, Ontario by singer/guitarist Johnnie Dee, keyboardist Brad Bent and drummer Mike Lengyell. As with most bands, members changed early on and in 1983 lead guitarist Derry Grehan and drummer Dave Betts joined the band. The band first gained notoriety when the Grehan-penned “New Girl Now” won a contest put on by Toronto radio station Q107. This helped lead the band to signing with WEA Canada. Ray Coburn took over on keyboards and Brian Backstone joined on bass and the band recorded an album. After completion of the album, Gary Lalonde took Backstone’s place on bass. In 1984, their self-titled debut album was released. Four songs made the Canadian charts, led by “New Girl Now,” which also reached the top 50 in the US. Their 1986 follow-up, The Big Prize, also contained four Canadian charting songs. “Feel It Again” (#34) and “What Does It Take” (#52) charted in the US. That year Rob Pruess took over on keyboards. After a delay due to Dee getting hit by a car at LAX in 1987, the band released Racing After Midnight in 1988. The album reached the top 10 in Canada. A greatest hits album, The Singles, followed in 1989 and included a pair of new singles that again charted in Canada. Coburn returned for the tour for this album. Lalonde and Betts left the band in 1991 and the subsequent album Monsters Under the Bed sold poorly. Throughout the 90’s only Dee and Grehan remained with the band. The pair were behind the band’s 2002 album Lemon Tongue. In 2007, the classic lineup of Dee, Grehan, Coburn, Lalonde, and Betts reunited for tours as well as the 2008 album Clifton Hill. In 2009, Peter Nunn took over for Coburn and remains with the band today. The band will be making their first appearance at Moondance Jam.

My Take
For years I have sung along to “New Girl Now” every time it has come on the radio. That is a classic 80’s song and is one of the songs I am most looking forward to hearing at this year’s jam. I admit I couldn’t really name any other songs by the band before they were signed but I have been pleasantly surprised that I knew several of their songs, including “Feel It Again,” “Wave Babies,” and “What Does It Take.” I downloaded most of their setlist as well and have been familiarizing myself with their catalog, which really has an 80’s sound that I think most jammers will enjoy. I encourage those of you who grew up in the 80’s to check out their videos below. All of them just scream 80’s! They have had a ton of hits in Canada over the years, which should make many Canadian jammers happy. I’m impressed that four current members have been with the band for majority of the band’s hit-making years. That is hard to find in today’s music world. Hopefully the jam will continue to sign bands from Canada as they always seem to deliver.

These guys are really good live - saw them at Sioux Falls Ribfest a year ago. Can't believe "Bad Attitude" wasn't a chart hit for them. It got a lot of air play after being featured in the final Miami Vice episode.
