St. Paul, MN guitarist Jan Kuehnemund moved to Hollywood in the early 80’s in pursuit of making it as a musician. Eventually she formed the classic lineup of Vixen with singer Janet Gardner, drummer Roxy Petrucci, and bassist Share Pedersen. The band signed to EMI in 1988 and released their debut album Vixen later that year. The song “Edge of a Broken Heart” became the first hit for the band, reaching #26 on the Billboard Hot 100 due to heavy rotation on MTV and radio and the album reached #41. The #22 hit “Cryin’” followed and the band earned opening slots on tours by Ozzy Osbourne and Bon Jovi. The band re-entered the studio in 1989 and in 1990 released Rev It Up. “How Much Love” (#44) and “Love is a Killer” (#71) both charted for the band and the album reached #52. The band was able to headline as well as open for other band, most notably Kiss, who was touring without makeup at the time. However, due to the changing music scene and differences among members, the band disbanded in 1991. Gardner and Petrucci were a part of a reunion in 1991 that led to the album Tangerine. Kuehnemund joined Gardner and Petrucci for another reunion in 2001 as part of the Voices of Metal tour. However, Gardner and Petrucci left mid-tour while Kuehnemund eventually recorded Live & Learn with another group of musicians. The four original members eventually joined together for one show in 2004 for the VH1 show Bands Reunited. The band was planning a full reunion but Kuehnemund was diagnosed with cancer in early 2013. Kuehnemund passed away just 9 months later in October 2013. The 3 surviving members decided to reunited in December 2013 and have been playing shows since 2014. The band will be making their first appearance at Moondance Jam on Friday at 5pm.

My Take
I saw Vixen along with White Lion in 1989 in what was one of the more memorable concerts of that time for me. White Lion’s Mike Tramp and Vito Bratta nearly came to blows that night after the concert. My friend Troy and I stayed after the show and witnessed the near-fight. I could tell Bratta just hated Tramp. That hate still survives today apparently since they haven’t reunited since breaking up over 20 years ago. Troy and I also saw got the White Lion drummers autograph outside the tour bus, which happened to be swarming with groupies with the biggest hair you have ever seen. It was our glimpse into the music scene at the time. Such great times! Back to Vixen, the show that night was good and I was lucky to see them considering their time together was so short. I thought they really sounded and looked a lot like late 80’s era Heart. That was probably their downfall though as grunge soon shoved hair bands to the curb and Vixen disappeared like so many bands that hit it big at basically the wrong time. I’m glad they have reunited and are able to tour again, albeit without original guitarist Jan Kuehnemund, who passed away in 2013 from cancer. However, the other 3 original members are still together and live clips show the band really enjoying themselves and still sounding great. I will take an 80’s hair band at the jam any time. Those bands have a special place in my heart as I spent so many nights in the late 80’s and early 90’s seeing them all in their heyday. It is great being able to see some of them again on the greatest stage in the world at Moondance Jam.
The music brought me to Moondance Jam. The people bring me back.

Awesome review bud! Glad you mentioned Contraband. Loved that album and was lucky enough to see them with Ratt and LA Guns when I lived in Vegas. Don't know how many shows they did, but it couldn't have been many.
I woke up this mornin' and the Sun was gone. Turned on some music to start my day. I lost myself in a familiar song...I closed my eyes and I slipped away.
I will choose freewill...
Well I've never been to Heaven, but I've been to Oklahoma...
