Chad Kroeger – lead vocals, lead guitar
Ryan Peake – rhythm guitar, keyboards
Mike Kroeger – bass guitar
Daniel Adair - drums

Nickelback was formed in 1995 in Alberta, Canada by Chad Kroeger, Ryan Peake, Mike Kroeger, and Brandon Kroeger. They recorded a demo EP titled Hesher in 1996. Several songs from that EP were included on their first full-length album, Curb, released later in 1996. The album was not commercially successful, but Ron Burman from Roadrunner Records was impressed by the album and signed the band. Ryan Vikedal took over for Brandon Kroeger on drums in 1998 and their lineup was set. Roadrunner Records released the album The State in 2000 and the band started to experience some success. Both “Leader of Men” and “Breathe” reached the top 10 of the Mainstream Rock Chart. Momentum was clearly on their side as the band worked on their third album Silver Side Up. That 2001 album was a huge success and eventually went 6X Platinum. It peaked at #2 in the US and went #1 in Canada behind a string of hits lead by the #1 pop chart hit “How You Remind Me” and “Too Bad” and “Never Again,” which both reached #1 on the Mainstream Rock chart. Kroeger had a hit on his hands as wel in 2002 with “Hero” from the Spider-Man soundtrack. The Long Road followed in 2003 and another stream of Mainstream Rock hits followed, lead by the #1 “Figured You Out,” which top the chart for 13 weeks. Drummer Daniel Adair, from 3 Doors Down, took over on drums from Vikedal in 2005 and the band released All the Right Reasons. This album has been their most successful to date with over 8 million in sales behind five Billboard Hot 100 Top 20 singles, three of which reached the Top 10 with “Photograph,” “Faraway,” and “Rockstar.” The band took off most of 2007, then began their next album with Mutt Lange as producer. Dark Horse was released in 2008 and the band released 8 singles total from the album. Songs “Something in Your Mouth” and “Burn it to the Ground” helped the album eventually go 3X Platinum. The band launched a world tour that kept them on the road into 2010. The band had already started writing for their next album while on tour for Dark Horse. Here and Now was released in 2011 and debuted at #2 on the charts. The album went 2X Platinum behind the songs “Bottoms Up” and “When We Stand Together.” The band released The Best of Nickelback Volume 1 in 2013 before releasing No Fixed Address in 2014. The first single off that album, “Edge of a Revolution” reached #1 on the Mainstream Rock chart and “Million Miles and Hour” reached #11. The band will be playing their first Moondance Jam on their No Fixed Address tour.

My Take
Surprisingly, I have only seen Nickelback once, way back in 2000 when they played the 2nd stage at KC’s Rockfest. I remember their songs starting to take off and my wife and I made sure to catch their set in front of just a few hundred fans on the 2nd stage, which was just a small stage tucked back in the trees behind the main stage. It was cool to see them as they were really just starting out; now they now routinely play arenas when on tour. When I started having kids in 2001, my concert days were cut down considerably so this will be my first time seeing them since they have shot into superstardom. Their latest album has not been as well received as usual and recent concert reviews, while generally positive, have mentioned smaller crowds than the band is used to. It has become somewhat of a ‘cool’ thing in the music world to make fun of Nickelback and I think that, along with the natural aging of the band and their core fans, is finally starting to hurt some of their album and ticket sales. However, they are going to bring a great catalog of songs to the jam stage. With Shinedown and Nickelback, we are getting two of the best-selling rock bands of the last 15 years on the jam stage. If you are in doubt at all, check out some of their live videos, especially their Live at Sturgis release from 2006. That is a great show at the height of their popularity. Casual fans will be surprised at how many songs they know by the band. The jam is getting arguably the most popular rock band in the 2000’s to close the first night of the jam. Fans should be pumped and ready to see a great rock show.
The music brought me to Moondance Jam. The people bring me back.

Another great review, I had the first 2 cds before Silver Side Up came out, thought they were a good rock and roll band. I have all the albums except the last one and agree that the live show from Sturgis showed that we are going to get a great show Thursday night!
Moondance Jam...the best 4, make that 7 days of my year!

Well done. Quite frankly, I could never understand why this band has been the target of much fun-poking. There are many songs I am looking forward to hearing. Very excited for this show. It will be my first time seeing them.
