Shinedown was formed in Jacksonville, Florida in 2001 by singer Brent Smith, drummer Barry Kerch, bassist Brad Stewart, and guitarist Jasin Todd. The band released Leave a Whisper in 2003 and the band quickly became one of the most successful rock bands in recent memory. The album had four top 10 US Mainstream Rock hits with “Fly From the Inside” (#5), “45” (#3), a cover of Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “Simple Man” (#5), and “Burning Bright” (#2). The album was certified gold in 2004 and reached platinum status in 2005, the year the band’s 2nd album Us and Them was released. The album went gold and reached #23 on the charts behind the #1 US Mainstream Rock hit “Save Me,” #2 “I Dare You,” and the #4 “Heroes.” “Save Me” (#72) and “I Dare You” (#88) also reached the Billboard Hot 100 Chart. Todd and Stewart would leave the band after this album. Zach Myers (guitarist) and Eric Bass (bass) joined the band for 2008’s The Sound of Madness. The album is the band’s most successful release with and amazing five #1 Mainstream Rock singles (“Devoiur,” “Second Chance,” “Sound of Madness,” “The Crow & the Butterfly,” and “Diamond Eyes (Boom-Lay Boom-Lay Boom)” and another at #2 (“If You Only Knew”). The album also reached platinum status after spending 120 weeks on the charts and topping out at #8. “Second Chance” also became the highest reaching Billboard Hot 100 song when it reached #7. The success of this album lead to an American Music Award nomination in the “Alternative Rock” category in 2009. Their gold-selling live album Somewhere in the Stratosphere was released in 2011 before their latest, 2012’s Amaryllis. It debuted at #4 on the charts and has reached gold status. It continued the band’s Mainstream Rock Chart success with two more #1’s (“Bully” and “Unity””, a pair of #2’s (“Enemies” and “I’ll Follow You”) and #4 “Adrenaline.” The band has toured all over the world during their career, playing many of the world’s biggest festivals, including the Download Festival in Donington Park in 2009, and multiple times at the giant one day Rockfest in Kansas City, Missouri. The band will be making their first appearance at Moondance Jam and will close out the opening night of this year’s jam.

Did You Know?
Zach Myers is also the lead singer and guitarist for the band The Fairwell.
Myers, from Memphis, was an international touring blues artist at age 14.
He also toured with the band Saliva in 2004 and 2005.
“Save Me” was #1 on the Active Rock Chart for 12 week in 2005.
Chris Daughtry performed “I Dare You” as a contestant on American Idol.
Brent Smith eventually helped co-write “There and Back Again” for Daughtry’s first album.
The band is the only to have their first ten songs all reach the top five on the Mainstream Rock chart.
They have actually had their first 18 singles reach the top five of that chart.
“Second Chance” became only the 3rd song to reach #1 on Billboard’s Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks, Hot Modern Rock Tracks, and Hot Adult Top 40 Tracks charts.
The first was Moondance Jam alum’s The Wallflowers’ “One Headlight.”
"Second Chance" is also the last song Casey Kasem played before his final sign off.
The song has been certified 3X platinum by the RIAA.
It ranked #7 on VH1’s top 40 videos of 2009.
“If You Only Knew” was used as a promo for ABC’s soap opera One Life to Live.
The band has issued acoustic EP’s and have even gone on an acoustic tour.
Their 2011 video release Somewhere in the Stratosphere has gone gold.
In 2006 the band recorded a cover of Alice in Chains’ “Nutshell” with Moondance Jam alum’s Seether.
Brent Smith sang backing vocals for another jam alum, Theory of a Deadman, on their song “So Happy.”
The band provided the song “I’m Alive” in 2012 for the soundtrack for The Avengers.
In 2010, the band went on the Dark Horse Tour with Nickelback and jam alum’s Sick Puppies.
Besides playing Rockfest in Kansas City multiple times, the band also recorded portions of their live CD/DVD in Kansas City.
Parts of the video for “Unity” has live footage from a KC Rockfest performance. In that video you will see a person in a wheelchair crowdsurfing. (Yes that happened!) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_gVdi6sizeY
The band has not toured since 2013.

My Take
Since 2003, no one has had more Mainstream Rock Chart success than Shinedown. They have ruled this chart with 18 top 5 hits during that time period, the only band to even have 10 straight songs reach the top 5 of that chart. They are easily the biggest signing among newer bands since Moondance Jam has started signing newer bands to headline the festival. Because of that, they are at #2 on my list of bands I am most excited to see (behind Frampton of course!). I think they will bring a huge crowd to close out Jam 24. I truly believe they are today’s Led Zeppelin, AC/DC, Def Leppard, etc. If rock music is going to live on generation after generation, and I believe it will, it will be bands like Shinedown that do it. If Moondance Jam needs to sign newer bands to be able to continue, and I think it does, Shinedown is the kind of band that will help them do it. Like Seether last year, I really believe that they will be the new band that will win over new fans at this year’s jam. I just wish they were playing earlier than Saturday so more people could talk about their performance while at the jam. They have a huge setlist of hit songs that many people will know. If you have paid any attention to newer rock music over the last 12 years, you will know the majority of their setlist. A good place to familiarize yourself with the band would be with the album The Sound of Madness. It is, in my opinion, one of the best rock albums released over the last 10 years. If not, check out “Second Chance” as that is probably their most recognizable song. If not, you should at least be able to hear a killer version of Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “Simple Man.” I’m hoping they do an acoustic set of songs as well. I’m really looking forward to this show and I’m hoping for one of the biggest final night’s in Moondance Jam history.
The music brought me to Moondance Jam. The people bring me back.

Love the write up as usual Chris, I also believe they will put on a great show. They do a lot of acoustic versions of their songs, so I too am hoping for a few of those.
Moondance Jam...the best 4, make that 7 days of my year!
