Sublime with Rome - Thursday at 5pm

Rome Ramirez – Guitar/Vocals
Eric Wilson - Bass
Josh Freese - Drums

Sublime formed in 1988 in Long Beach, California when high school friends Eric Wilson and Bud Gaugh and met up with singer Bradley Nowell and got them turned on to reggae and ska. The band recorded some songs and played the local club circuit. The band recorded Jah Won’t Pay the Bills in 1990 with help from music student Michael Happoldt, who snuck them into his school’s music studio to record. After developing a following throughout the state, the band released 40 oz. to Freedom on Skunk Records in 1992. The song “Date Rape” helped them get radio airplay and an even bigger following. The band signed on with Gasoline Alley of MCA Records and released Robbin’ the Hood in 1994. Word of Sublime’s live show helped the band land spots on the first ever Vans Warped Tour as well as the inaugural SnoCore Tour. In February of 1996, the band started work on their 3rd album but Nowell would never see the album’s release. He died of a drug overdose on May 25, 1996, two months before the release of the self-titled Sublime. The album went on to become a monstrous success, with the hits “What I Got” hitting #1 on the Modern Rock Chart. Several other songs, including “Santeria” and “Wrong Way” would chart and help the album reach 5x Platinum. The band immediately called it quits after Nowell's death. Wilson and Gaugh would go on to form the Long Beach Dub Allstars from 1997 to 2002. The pair would eventually reunite in 2009 as Sublime with singer/guitarist Rome Ramirez. Due to legal issues, in 2010 the band changed their name to Sublime with Rome. In 2011, the band released their first album, Yours Truly. Drummer Josh Freese took over for Gaugh in 2013. The band will be making their first appearance at Moondance Jam.

My Take
I was shocked when I heard that Moondance would be getting Sublime with Rome, especially at such an early time slot. I know not all classic rock fans have kept up with new music over the years, but in the late 90’s Sublime was huge, with a tragic story that never let the band experience the fame. They could easily take a 9pm slot at the jam and we are lucky to have them at the jam this year. They are one of the few Moondance Jam bands that could play at any number of the various summer music festivals in the US and fit right in. They have a great reggae/ska sound that will really play well on the jam stage. I also think they are one of the few bands that kids today view as relevant from the late 90’s time period. I think they will bring in a big number of fans in their 20’s and 30’s who want to relive their youth and probably hear these songs live for the first time. Right now, their set might be the one I am looking forward to the most for this year’s jam. They are going to get the party started early and I predict a huge crowd for 5pm on Jam Thursday.
The music brought me to Moondance Jam. The people bring me back.

I was listening to Sublime with my daughter as she is a big Sublime fan. Wow they are really good :D
Great way to kick off the Jam. I agree with Chris they could easily be a 9pm band. We probably
have the best 5pm bands in the history of MDJ this year!
