Cracker – Thursday, July 14

David Lowery – Singer
Johnny Hickman – Guitarist
Frank Funaro – Drummer
Sal Maida - Bassist

Cracker formed in California in 1990 by singer David Lowery and guitarist Johnny Hickman after Lowery’s previous band, Camper Van Beethoven, disbanded. The pair joined bassist Davey Faragher and recorded a demo which helped them sign with Virgin Records. They released their self-titled debut album in 1992 and the song “Teen Angst (What the World Needs Now)” shot to #1 on the Modern Rock Tracks chart. The momentum from that hit continued into their sophomore album, Kerosene Hat, which contained two more hits, “Low” and “Get Off This.” “Low” reached #64 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #3 on the Modern Rock chart and is probably their most recognizable song. Kerosene Hat reached #59 in the charts and went platinum. After this album, Faragher quit the band and was replaced by Bob Rupe. In 1996, the band released The Golden Age, which made it to #63 on the album charts but quickly faded away. Drummer Frank Funaro joined the band during this time. The band tried again in 1998 with Gentleman’s Blues, which only reached #182 on the charts. Camper Van Beethoven reunited in 1999 but Cracker remained together, releasing a compilation album in 2000 and an album of new material in 2002 called Forever. The band left Virgin in 2003 and independently released a cover album of country and western tunes, as well as an album of bluegrass versions of their own songs. An album of new material, Greenland, followed in 2006. Their latest release, 2009’s Sunrise in the Land of Milk and Honey, became their first album to make the top 200 in over 10 years. The band will be making their first Moondance Jam appearance.

Did You Know?
Cracker contributed the song “Good Times Bad Times” on the Led Zeppelin tribute album Encomium.
They also had a cover of the Grateful Dead’s “Loser” on their album Kerosene Hat.
Sunrise in the Land of Milk and Honey reached #28 on the Billboard Independent Album chart.
Singer Lowery and drummer Funaro are also current members of Camper Van Beethoven.
“Euro Trash Girl” was a hit single released in 1994. However, the song originally was an unlisted track on 1992’s hit album Kerosene Hat.
The single for “Euro Trash Girl” had five songs, including a live cover of Neil Young’s “F&*#ing Up.”
David Lowery was once the producer for the Counting Crows.
Adam Duritz, singer for Counting Crows, makes an appearance on the band’s latest album, Sunrise in the Land of Milk and Honey.
Frank Funaro was a member of Joey Ramone’s band.
Sal Maida was a member of Roxy Music.
Cracker fans call themselves Crumbs.
Hickman and Lowery both do solo shows on off dates when Cracker is on tour.
Lowery and Funaro also perform on off dates with their band Camper Van Beethoven.
Cracker’s manager is Velena Vego, wife of singer Lowery.
Lowery is also a lecturer at the University of Georgia in their music business program.
Lowery also keeps a blog called 300 Songs, which gives the history behind 300 songs by Cracker and Camper Van Beethoven.
Camper Van Beethoven scored a hit with “Pictures of Matchstick Men,” a Status Quo cover.
Lowery has also appeared in two movies, River Red and This Space Between Us.
Cracker played for US troops on a tour of Iraq in 2009.
The video for “Yalla Yalla” was made from YouTube videos of American soldiers stationed abroad (see video below).

My Take
Cracker plays a very listenable brand of rock and roll that will play well on the Moondance stage. Their lyrics are also veryclever, for a good example listen to “Teen Angst (What the World Needs Now),” with the line “What the world needs now is another folk singer…like I need a hole in my head.” While that is a song most people have heard, even more have probably heard their biggest hit “Low.” That song reminds me of Tom Petty and had he released that song in the 80’s I believe it would have been a #1 hit. Give it a listen (see below) and see if you agree. Right now I am looking forward to hearing that song more than any song by the five bands announced so far this year. That song has is just killer. “Get Off This” is another song that got a lot of airplay and it is the song that purist Cracker fans (called Crumbs :) ) love to hate. Not sure why because I think that is also a good song. “Euro-Trash Girl” is another solid offering from the band. Their sound at times also reminds me of another band who played an early slot a few years back, The Gear Daddies. Their setlists lately have relied heavily on their latest album Sunrise in the Land of Milk and Honey, so I am definitely going to have to pick up that album soon. I am really excited that we are getting them on the Moondance Stage at 3pm. I think they are going to surprise some people with their performance, kind of like the Spin Doctors did with their early appearance a couple years ago. I have included several live videos of them below as well as I know a lot of people are unfamiliar with them and I think getting an idea of how good they are live will help bring out a good crowd for their show. I am also pumped that the jam is putting national bands on at 3pm like last year. It raises the number of bands from 12 to 15, which almost gives us back the number of bands we had before we lost a day. I think Cracker is going to start the first official day of Moondance Jam 20 off very well.
