Eddie Money, Friday July 15

Eddie Money, born Edward Mahoney, was born and raised in New York City and originally followed his father’s and grandfather’s footsteps as a policeman. However, in 1968, after spending time in the New York City police academy, Eddie left for California in hopes of making it as a musician. Eddie met the legendary music promoter Bill Graham, who became his manager and helped him get signed to Columbia Records. He released his self-titled debut album in 1977. The album, which featured members of the Steve Miller Band, would spawn two hits, “Two Ticket to Paradise” (#22) and “Baby Hold On” (#11) and eventually went double platinum, reaching a peak of #37 on the Billboard album chart. While his second album, platinum-selling Life for the Taking, reached #17 on the charts, only “Maybe I’m a Fool” (#22) became a hit. His third album, 1980’s Playing for Keeps, charted no hit singles and reached just #35 on the charts. Following a break of over a year to deal with substance abuse issues, Money returned in 1982 with No Control and again achieved platinum status with a #20 ranking. “Think I’m in Love” was a smash hit, reaching #16 on the Billboard chart and #1 on the US Mainstream chart, becoming his first #1 hit. A year later, however, his album Where’s the Party? struggled to reach just on #67 on the chart. Money took a break and returned in 1986 with Can’t Hold Back, another platinum album that contained two top 20 hits, Grammy-nominated duet with Ronnie Spector “Take Me Home Tonight” (#4, #1 on the Mainstream Rock chart) and “I Wanna Go Back” (#14, #3). Another hit, “Walk on Water,” (#9, #2) was featured on 1988’s Nothin’ to Lose. A greatest hits package, Greatest Hits: The Sound of Money, was released in 1989 and went gold. While he has continued releasing albums, the latest being 2007’s Wanna Go Back, none have recreated the success of his previous albums. Money has continued to tour and has made a couple appearances on television sitcoms. His songs have been featured on countless movies and video games, keeping his music alive for a new generation of fans. The most recent use of his music has also been the most high-profile, a new movie starring Topher Grace called Take Me Home Tonight. Money will be making his third appearance at Moondance Jam, but his first since 1999.

My Take
Eddie Money’s signing to Moondance Jam this year has kind of slid under the radar and not created a lot of talk. However, his songs “Two Tickets to Paradise” and “Take Me Home Tonight” are played as much as any classic rock songs today. There is even 80’s themed movie recently released called Take Me Home Tonight! How many classic rock artists can say they have a movie titled after one of their songs? This year we have two bands who can boast that, Money with Take Me Home Tonight and Kiss with Detroit Rock City. There are a couple reasons I think that Money may not be earning the respect that another artist may have with such a big catalog of hits. One reason is the fact he has rarely disappeared from the music scene for any long period of time. Other than a few breaks in the 1980’s he has toured regularly the last 20 years so even the casual music fan has had a pretty good chance of seeing him live. The other is the fact that many of his performances have been marred by his apparent drunkenness. I have only seen him once, at a free outdoor show in Kansas City a couple years ago. He brought in a huge crowd at that show. He had a good stage presence, good crowd interaction, and not only sang but played saxophone and harmonica. He seems to have a genuine love for performing, which should be admired, and he brings a huge catalog of songs with which most people will be familiar. I am looking forward to all his hits, of course, but I also want to hear the songs “Trinidad” and “Gimme Some Water” (Check them out below!). If he plays early in the day, which I think he will due to the fact he has to be in Oregon the next day, I think his set will be one that people will enjoy. I also think that if he plays at 3 or 5pm, he could bring in one of the bigger early crowds from recent jams.

very good review - I am really excited about seeing Eddie Money and my favourite shows are the 3pm and 5 pm because I get right up front rather than sitting later on -in my chair ( alcohol could have a play in this !) for the evening shows.

Money rocks! We've seen him probably 5 or 6 times. The last time was at Taste of Minnesota. That was a year or two before Taste of Minnesota co-founder Ron Maddox passed away, following which Taste was fed to the wolves whom promptly destroyed the festival.
Wife and I are excited the Money-Man will be at Moondance this year.
I recall sitting a thatch roof Tiki bar in Thailand in about 1982 having the bartender play "Two Tickets" over and over again. Good Times. Good Times. :D
