Joan Jett and the Blackhearts– Saturday, July 16 at 9pm

Joan Jett was born in Philadelphia and at the age of 9 moved to Rockville, Maryland until she was 13, when her family moved to West Covina, California, just outside Los Angeles. Around the same time as her move to California, she got her first guitar and immediately fell in love with music. Her idol was Suzi Quatro, a local musician who achieved moderate US success but had several hits in Europe. Jett modeled herself after Quatro and her glam-rock style. She met Sandy West and manager Kim Fowley and formed The Runaways in 1975. Micki Steele, Lita Ford, and Cherie Currie rounded out the original lineup of The Runaways. The band would headline shows around the US with songs “Cherry Bomb,” “Queens of Fire,” and “School Days.” They would become a major hit in Japan and in 1977 was the #4 imported music act in that country. After 5 albums and several lineup changes, the band disbanded. Many factors were involved in the breakup, including a movie that was to feature the band, but several members chose to not participate in. Jett went on and produced The Germs one and only album in 1979 before embarking on a solo career. In 1980 she independently released a solo self-titled album, featuring the song “Bad Reputation.” The album’s success helped it be re-released a year later on Boardwalk Records as the album Bad Reputation. She then formed a backing band called The Blackhearts for 1981’s I Love Rock ‘n Roll album. Their cover of The Arrow’s “I Love Rock ‘n Roll” became an immediate hit. The song reached #1, where it stayed for 7 weeks, and helped the album reach #2 and eventually sell over 2 million copies in the US. Her cover of Tommy James and the Shandell’s “Crimson and Clover” also was a hit, reaching #7. “Do You Wanna Touch Me,” from her previous album also became a hit at this time, reaching #20. In 1983, the band released the follow-up, titled Album. Two more top 40 hits followed, “Everyday People” at #37 and “Fake Friends” at #35. In 1984, the group released Glorious Results of a Misspent Youth. The album only reached #67 and only #105 “I Love You Love Me Love” would hit the top 200. Even a remake of “Cherry Bomb” failed to chart. Good Music from 1986 did not fare any better, reaching just #105 behind the #85 title song. Jett took her first serious turn at acting in 1987 with the Michael J. Fox movie Light of Day. She also had a #33 hit song from the movie, the Bruce Springsteen-penned “Light of Day,” which was credited to the band from the movie called The Barbusters. Jett and the band would return in 1988 with another hit album, Up Your Alley. The album climbed all the way to #19 behind the #19 hit “Little Liar” and her mega hit “I Hate Myself For Loving You,” which became her third top 10 hit when it climbed to #8. Her cover album The Hit List was released in 1990 and reached #36 on the charts behind her #36 “Dirty Deeds,” a cover of AC/DC’s “Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap.” This would prove to be her last album to chart however. Notorious came along in 1991, followed by Pure and Simple in 1994. In 1995, she released Evil Stig with remaining members of the band The Gits, whose original singer was Mia Zapata. She would then take a break from recording until 2004’s Naked. The band last released Sinner in 2006. Jett has enjoyed a career resurgence over the last couple of years. In 2010, Jett was an executive producer on the biopic movie The Runaways, which was based on a book by Cherrie Currie. The movie featured Kristen Stewart at Jett and Dakota Fanning as Currie. Jett also released a new greatest hits package in 2010, which not only featured her hits with the Blackhearts but also featured re-recordings of three hits of The Runaways. Jett will be making her third appearance at Moondance Jam, after her performances in 1999 and 2003.

My Take
I cannot say I have always been a huge fan of Joan Jett. However, I have always respected her career and her place in music history, especially after watching The Runaways movie last year. To make it through what The Runaways all went through and still be touring and making music today says a lot about her. I would say she probably has the most recognizable song of any performer at this year’s jam with “I Love Rock ‘n Roll.” Probably only Kiss’s “Rock and Roll All Nite” comes close. It just seems that is a song everyone knows and I am really looking forward to seeing her perform that signature hit. I recently downloaded her greatest hits, which also has her re-recordings of several songs from her time with The Runaway, and I am really impressed with the sound she produced on pretty much every song. I have never seen her live but my guess is that she will rock very hard and bring a high energy show to the stage. She also has is one of the few classic rock performers that could fit on any music bill. Heck, a few years ago she played on Warped Tour and there can’t be another Moondance Jam performer in history that can say that. Her career has also enjoyed a resurgence the last couple years with The Runaways movie so I think the jam is getting her at the right time. Some classic rock performers also may not want to go on before Stone Temple Pilots, but I can about guarantee that will not be a problem for her.

Do You Wanna Touch Me - Gary Glitter, now that takes me back a few years. Not so funny how he ended up though!!!!!

Don't think I ever heard AC DC by Joan Jett (unless she played it during one of her stops last time). I'm looking forward to seeing her. I love her greatest hits collection. Might have to listen to that at some point later today.

That's right! I never knew that Suzi was an actual artist at the time. I had no idea until reading up on Joan Jett. I loved Happy Days back in the day!

You can see that JJ even resembles Leather Tuscadero! If they ever did another show, she could/should play her!! I loved the eps with "Leather" on them ('cept when Joannie tried to be a backup singer - yuck! I mean, really?!!) :D Leather was way better than her tramp of a sister, Pinky (no offense to our lovely honey sweet Pinkie!). Pink hotpants with red hair!??! Really now.

Pinky Tuscadero! How could I forget!? It all seems so corny now, but I guess that was "Happy Days" and I watched it a lot, too, as a kid! Remember they (Leather & Pinky) each had their own little clap & hand movements!!!?

Yup, I'm still trying to catch up... a week behind...

Chris, after reading "Your Take" on Joan Jett... I decided to pick up "The Runaways" movie (I had forgotten all about that one, but think when it first came out I had wanted to see it)... hope to watch it this weekend sometime!!! I think it will be cool to get the background story!!!
