Great White got their start in the early 1980’s out of the L.A. music scene that would churn out many metal bands throughout the decade. Singer Jack Russell, guitarist Mark Kendall, bassist Lorne Black, and drummer Gary Holland would form the early lineup of Great White. The band first performed at the legendary Troubadour in Hollywood in 1981 and would gain attention in 1982 with the song “On Your Knees” from their independent EP titled Out of the Night. This song helped the band score a record deal with EMI and their self-titled debut album was released in 1984. While this album did not take off as hoped, in 1986 the band released an independent album titled Shot In The Dark. The song “Face the Day” from the album would get major airplay on L.A. radio station KLOS and would be the station’s #2 song of the year. This helped the band get signed to Capitol Records, who would re-release the album. Audie Desbrow would take over on drums and Michael Lardie would be added to guitar and keyboards during this period. The band then released Once Bitten in 1987 and would score three Billboard Album Rock Chart top 10 singles, led by the songs “Rock Me” and “Save Your Love.” The album would go on to sell over 1 million copies. Their next album …Twice Shy in 1989 would prove even more successful. The bands cover of Ian Hunter’s “Once Bitten…Twice Shy” would be nominated for a Grammy and would become the band’s highest charting single, shooting all the way to #5 on the Billboard Top 100. As the 90’s began, the band would release two more albums for Capitol Records. The album Hooked from 1991 would go gold and contain the hits “Desert Moon” and “Call It Rock N’ Roll.” In 1992, the band released Psycho City, which would sell the least copies of their tenure with Capitol Records. Like most bands who hit it big in the 80’s, the 90’s weren’t kind to them. The band got shuffled from label to label but continued to release albums, Sail Away in 1994, Let It Rock in 1996, and Can’t Get There From Here in 1999. However, none of those albums would be as commercially successful at their earlier releases. In 2000, Kendall and Desbrow would announce they were leaving the band and Russell rounded up the band to play a farewell show in 2001. In 2002, Jack Russell contacted Kendall about joining him on some of his solo shows and eventually they toured as Jack Russell’s Great White. Tragedy would strike on February 20, 2003 at one of these shows in Rhode Island. Pyrotechnics caught some soundproofing material on fire at the Station night club and 100 people would lose their lives, including the band’s guitarist Ty Longley. The band would eventually revert back to the name Great White and tour again in July of 2003 and donate proceeds to The Station Family Fund to benefit the families of those affected by the fire. For awhile in 2005 the band would go on hiatus due to Russell’s substance abuse problems. In 2006, Lardie and Desbrow would rejoin the group as well as one-time bassist Sean McNabb. The band made their first appearance at Moondance Jam in 2008. Scott Snyder has since taken over for McNabb on bass. The band released the album Rising in April 2009 on Frontier Records. Russell has experienced health problems since 2010 when he had surgery for a perforated bowel. The band has had several fill-ins for Russell since then, included Jani Lane (ex-Warrant), Paul Shortino, and Terry Ilous (XYZ). It is unclear who will be singing with the band when they play Moondance Jam. The band will be making their 2nd appearance at Moondance Jam on Thursday, July 14 at 7pm.

My Take
Since I was in high school in the late 80’s, I have always been a fan of 80’s rock. When I hear Great White I immediately think of that time period and all the great concerts I was lucky enough to attend. I was not able to see Great White during this time though. I was finally able to see them years later but they were no longer touring with their original lineup. It was great to see so many original members back at Moondance Jam in 2008, when they were one of the surprises of the jam for me. I remember being impressed by just how bluesy they are live. (See my review of their performance below.) They again bring to Moondance one of the most recognizable songs from the hair metal period, a cover of Ian Hunter’s “Once Bitten Twice Shy.” You could hardly turn on MTV in 1989 and not see the video for this song. Perhaps even better songs to hear live, however, are “Rock Me,” their first Billboard hit, and “House of Broken Love,” their signature ballad. The band also usually covers a Led Zeppelin song or two in every one of their live shows. In fact, the band has released two Led Zeppelin cover albums and their live acoustic cover of “Babe I’m Gonna Leave You” is one of the best covers of Zeppelin I have heard. Jack Russell sounds just like Robert Plant on this song. The band spent time back in the headlines for the horrific Station night club fire in 2003. It was a tragedy what happened in Rhode Island and many people’s lives were forever changed. I have been in many clubs over the years to see concerts just like that and I can’t imagine the horror that unfolded that night. The band even lost their guitarist Ty Longley in the fire. That tragedy is almost incomprehensible. It is impressive the band has been able to stay together since reforming in 2007, even with Russell’s recent health problems. I am curious who will be singing with them this time. If Russell can’t make it, I would like to see Jani Lane, as we would also be able to hear some Warrant hits on the Moondance Stage. Whoever they have singing, it should be a good set with a lot of songs that people know.

My review of their performance at Moondance Jam 2008 for Classicrockrevisited.com:
Great White finally took the stage after the rain to an extended opening of “Call It Rock and Roll” before lead singer Jack Russell took the stage to cheers and started singing. The band, now touring with almost the entire lineup that made them famous over 20 years ago, played an entertaining set of bluesy rock. Russell looks like he has conquered some of the demons he has dealt with in recent years and his voice still sounds great. The song that made them famous, “Once Bitten, Twice Shy,” actually was their weakest song of the day. The band is at its best on slow, building rockers like “Rock Me” and “House of Broken Love,” which was their best song of the day. Unfortunately the band did not cover their usual Led Zeppelin song, perhaps because of time constraints. Their live acoustic cover of “Babe I’m Gonna Leave You” is one of the best covers of Led Zeppelin I have ever heard. While their future was in serious doubt after the 2003 Rhode Island tragedy, the band seems to have a renewed energy and got the day started very well.

Michael Lardie also played with CC Deville in Samantha 7. Of course I had no idea about this until the Samantha 7 show I was at took time to introduce the band mates.
I saw Great White 2 or 3 times now since Jack Russel's health problems. The band was still really fun to see even though it looks like Jack Russel has took a beating.
I hope Great White will do Wasted Rock Ranger.I've only heard them do this song a couple times but I LOVE it when they do.
