Hailing from Escatawpa, Mississippi, a town of only 8,000 people, 3 Doors Down has risen to become one of the best-selling bands of their generation. Singer (then drummer as well) Brad Arnold, guitarist Matt Roberts, and bassist Todd Harrell grew up in the small town together and started playing locally in 1996 as teenagers. After recording a demo, a local radio station began to play “Kryptonite,” which became the station’s most requested song. The band flew to New York to play a showcase at the CBGB club, which led to their signing with Republic Records. Their debut album, The Better Life, was released in February of 2000 and went on to sell 3 million copies that year alone behind four hit songs. “Kryptonite,” the song that helped them get a record deal, would also be the song that propelled them to stardom. It climbed all the way to #3 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and reached #1 on the Mainstream Rock chart. “Loser” and “Duck and Run” would also reach #1 on the Mainstream Rock chart and “Be Like That” reached #24 on the Hot 100 chart as well. The album would climb to #8 on the charts and eventually went on to sell over 6 million copies. A sophomore album, Away From the Sun, was released in November 2002 and generated two more top 10 hits with “When I’m Gone” at #4 and “Here With You” at #5. These hits, along with an extensive touring schedule, helped the album sell over 4 million copies. In 2003, the band released a live EP, Another 700 Miles, that went gold. A third studio album, Seventeen Days, debuted at #1 but would only contain one hit with #14 “Let Me Go.” The album did eventually reach platinum status. To support the album, the band went on a co-headlining tour with Lynyrd Skynyrd. The band would have their second straight #1 album with 2008’s self-titled release. “It’s Not My Time” would reach #17 on the Hot 100 chart and even more impressively hit #1 on two other charts while “Citizen/Soldier” would reach #1 on the Rock chart. The album has gone gold with over 700,000 sales. In 2009, the band released a digital-only EP, Where My Christmas Lives, that contained that single as well six live acoustic songs from the 3 Doors Down album. The band’s next album, Time of My Life, will be released April 12. In anticipation of that album, the band has released a single, “When You’re Young,” which has reached #81 on the Hot 100 chart.

My Take
I was into the band a lot in their early years when the band struck a chord with music fans around the country with the hits off their debut album. For a while, it seemed like I heard the song “Kryptonite” every time I turned around. I even saw the band play an inspired show early in their career at a radio station show in Kansas City. I remember they seemed very happy with the fact they were becoming rock stars and they really seemed to enjoy what they were doing. However, their career also took off as I started having kids, which turned out to be a tough time for me to keep up with new music. Other than their debut, I didn’t have any albums by the band until they were signed to play Moondance Jam 20. Thankfully, their hits have been big enough that I am still somewhat familiar with their music. I have since purchased all their studio albums. Besides their debut, I like Seventeen Days the best. I know a lot of people have questioned their ability to close a night of the jam, but they are definitely one of the newer bands that can easily do just that. They have had a ton of hits that even most casual music fans will know. They are also very patriotic which should help them win over many of the jam faithful. An endorsement from last year’s closer, Lynyrd Skynyrd, should help as well as they have played with them many times and even co-headlined a tour together in 2005. Check out their live cover of "That Smell" below! Heck, they even got a duet out of Bob Seger with the song “Landing in London.” Their sound is very listenable and I think they are a band that will have staying power and eventually be considered ‘classic rock’. They have a brand of music that would fit any night at the jam, whether it is a newer band night or even a classic rock night. I am looking forward to their show and I think they will bring in more of crowd than some may be expecting.

Not looking forward to 3 Doors Down at all . They should have been on at 5pm. Can't believe Paul Rogers isnt headlining instead.

It could be debated for hours... Some people are going to dislike the way that the bands have fallen into place and some people are going to love it.

Thursday night looks OK with me. 3 Doors Down is a good closer for Thursday.

Thursday July 14th

3 Doors Down
38 Special
Great White
Candlebox
Cracker

(Paul Rodgers is on right before KISS on Friday night.. He is a worthy opening act for KISS)
